[Overcoming] Imposter Syndrome
Confetti & Conspiracies - Pastor Darius McClure
Luke 22:31-32
Imposter syndrome- The gap between how others see you and how you secretly see yourself.
Reflection- What do you do when you see yourself right, but see God wrong?
You will make decisions based on how you see yourself. Every decision will either birth a season or a cycle.
Season- when time moves and you move with it
Cycle-when time moves, but you don’t
Whoever controls the language, controls the culture.
The Bible uses the word ‘shame’ to describe imposter syndrome. Shame is the voice that says “I’m not enough.”
Shame makes you second guess what you’ve already accomplished.
Shame keeps you stuck in what you did, instead of acknowledging what God already said to be true about you.
If the enemy can’t stop you with sin, he will attempt to blind you with shame.
Romans 10:11- “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”
Romans 8:1-
Faith in Jesus removes the authority of shame. The feeling may be real, but it’s not right.
Jesus not only saves us from our sin, but also our shame.
Sin is what I did, shame is who I think I am. Sin is “I messed up. Shame is “I am messed up.”
Shame is when we choose hiding from pain instead of getting help for pain.
God can’t heal what we choose to hide. He can’t fix what we aren’t willing to face.
In the book of Genesis, Adam hid behind a tree because of shame. Jesus hung on a tree, to cover Adam [and me] of shame.
The blood of Jesus doesn’t just cancel sin, it also covers your shame.
Be mindful of the company you keep- some people are anointed to resurrect the old you. - A Word!
In the text, a man named Simon is dealing with imposter syndrome. When Simon got close to God, God spoke a word. He said “what people are calling you, is not aligned to where I am calling you.” His name was Simon, but God changed his name to Peter.
Imposter syndrome may have you struggling with low thinking- thinking on the level of where you used to be.
The Bible says.. “if you be faithful over a few things..”
Don’t discredit the seasons where it feels like you’re doing things that are insignificant.
Jesus-“Satan get thee behind me.”
He dealt gently with the person, while speaking body to the enemy.
Luke 22:31- He’s changed his name, but He’s calling him by his old name..
In other words, He calls him by his old name, because He’s acting out of his old nature.
Vs.32- “but I have prayed for you, that your faith won’t fail.”
Don’t just have faith in Me, have faith like Me…
Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
Jesus is showing us that our fall doesn’t negate our call.
When you resurrect who you used to be, you’re choosing familiarity over faith.
Faith over familiarity!- A Word.
How do we overcome this like Peter?
Remember you are covered.
Rely on faith, not feelings.- Ooh look, another Word! :) ; Feelings are up and down, faith is an anchor.
Restore strength in others. Most of what we go thru isn’t for us, it’s because someone else needs our story.
